As part of our manufacturing process, we make use of many techniques, and one of the most common in our industry is Acrylic Machining. Alongside other methods we utilise acrylic to produce a huge array of point of sale and retail display products. This method isn’t only useful when working with plastic material. We can also use it to machine wood, metal, and glass.
Acrylic machining is often done using a CNC, computer numerical control machining. A high specification piece of software (Alphacam 3 Axis CAD/CAM software) is used to control the head of the machine, that head could be fitted with a laser cutter, a blade or a drill. This manipulates the material to form the shapes required. The computer interprets highly detailed design drawings to produce items that are exactly the same every single time.

The information used by the software to control the machine will be based on the original design for the component, and when clients work with ASH Plastics Ltd, we can take their initial concept and use it to create a detailed design which can then be used in our Acrylic machining software. The advantages of CNC machining of Acrylic include the fact that it can deliver results to the tightest possible tolerances no matter how complex the shape which is being created needs to be and it guarantees that the last product produced is identical to the first. This is crucial for bulk order or repeat customer requirements.
CNC machining also allows us to work very fast, which as a key supplier to many industries, is vitally important. We understand the tight delivery times many retailers and shop fitters must work to, and we make sure that we can deliver on time as a matter of standard.
What is Acrylic?
Acrylic is a thermoplastic. It is very rigid making it useful a wide range of industrial and retail display applications. It is also transparent, shatterproof with UV stability making it an excellent, high strength alternative to glass and again very useful in many industries such as automotive. It also has incredible impact resistance too. It is also a very eco friendly material, it is 100% recyclable, so it is important that it is disposed of correctly at the end of its life, so it avoids landfill and is properly reused.
